Position Title: Vice President of Engineering- Payments
Department: Research & Development
Overview: The One Inc. Vice President of Engineering - Payments is responsible for the technical execution of the product roadmap, collaborating closely with Enterprise Architecture, and leading the delivery of scalable, cloud-native payment solutions. This role focuses on our payments platform to support the company’s accelerated growth. The ideal candidate brings experience building payment gateways that process over a billion dollars annually and has a strong track record with microservices architecture, API-first design, and AI-driven development practices.
Detailed Responsibilities
Personnel Management
Manages contributing engineering teams, by working with Team Leads, Scrum Masters, technical product managers, and software architects. Participate in hiring, performance reviews, team restructuring, and building a strong engineering culture focused on continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Program Management and Engineering Execution
Drives the execution of product features and technology roadmap in line with strategic goals. Ensures interdependencies are aligned across engineering, IT, UX, and UI disciplines. Enables teams to deliver resilient and high-performance payment services, ensuring scalability, compliance, and speed. Guides engineering input that directly supports broader business goals across marketing, sales, and operations.
Technical Leadership
Partners with Enterprise Architecture to develop a forward-looking technical roadmap, with a strong emphasis on microservices, container orchestration, and event-driven architecture to enable platform reuse and feature velocity. Defines and implements AI & ML, Agentic systems, and innovation initiatives across the platform and to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and incident detection. Ensures adherence to architectural standards and technical direction across distributed teams. Defines metrics and scorecards for team efficiency, quality, and innovation. Refines engineering best practices (agile, code quality, CI/CD, observability, incident response).
Strategy Development
Serves as part of the technology leadership team, collaborating cross-functionally with peers in other departments (e.g. Marketing, Business Development, and Ops) as well as the CPO, CIO and SVP-Engineering to shape product and platform strategy. Provides input on how to scale the technology organization in line with business growth and evolving customer needs.
Budget
Responsible for managing the budget for the engineering department. This includes: headcount, consulting expenses, licensing, equipment cost, professional development, travel and entertainment. Partners with finance and executive leadership to align investment decisions with growth objectives.
Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale Software Development initiatives and delivering modernized platforms.
- Strong experience with cloud platforms (Azure or AWS), microservices architecture, Kafka, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization.
- Ability to drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools to increase productivity, accuracy, and team velocity.
- Proven ability to collaborate across disciplines and lead teams through ambiguity and change.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective in Agile methodologies, including SAFE.
- Experience with PCI compliance and secure payment protocols.
- Ability to manage competing priorities while ensuring delivery of business-critical initiatives.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 8+ years’ experience with managing Software development teams and products.
- 10+ years’ hands-on experience in software development with Angular, C#, Java or other enterprise software language a plus.
- Experience building or leading payment systems processing over $1B+ in annual volume.
- Knowledge of the ACH and payment processing ecosystem and Insurance industry preferred.
- Experience leading global teams and managing a blended workforce of employees and contractors.
