Position Title: Staff Software Engineer/Claims Pay Architect

Department: Engineering

Reports To: Engineering Leadership

Supervisory Responsibilities: None (Senior Individual Contributor; provides technical leadership and mentorship across teams)

Location: US, Fully Remote

Overview:

The Claims Pay platform is central to One Inc’s insurance payments business, supporting high-volume, mission-critical transactions for insurance carriers. This role serves as the senior technical leader responsible for defining and executing the architectural evolution of the Claims Pay platform.

Currently built on a legacy SugarCRM foundation, the platform faces challenges related to scalability, performance, and maintainability, including duplicated components and monolithic constraints. The Staff Software Engineer / Principal Claims Pay Architect will lead the transformation to a modern, API-first, event-driven architecture.

This role partners closely with engineering, product, DevOps, and integration teams to define the target state architecture, sequencing, and roadmap. The architect will drive consolidation of duplicated systems, guide phased decomposition of the monolith, and ensure alignment with business goals and client SLA requirements.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced technical leader who excels as an individual contributor, demonstrates strong systems thinking, and can influence cross-functional teams without formal authority. This role delivers immediate and visible business impact by improving reliability, scalability, and delivery velocity across the Claims Pay platform.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and define the end-to-end architecture for the Claims Pay domain, from current state through future state
  • Set technical direction across multiple teams, ensuring alignment between architecture, execution, and business objectives
  • Lead migration from legacy SugarCRM monolith to a modern API-first, event-driven platform
  • Drive consolidation of duplicate processing components and define phased decomposition strategy
  • Establish architectural standards, design patterns, and document decisions through Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, DevOps, IT Ops, and integration teams to align on delivery approach and sequencing
  • Mentor engineers and technical leads through design reviews and hands-on guidance
  • Identify and mitigate systemic risks across scalability, reliability, performance, and delivery
  • Translate client SLA requirements into actionable architectural constraints and measurable outcomes
  • Communicate architectural vision, tradeoffs, and roadmap to technical and executive stakeholders
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate technologies, tools, and architectural patterns

Skills:

  • 8–12+ years of experience in software engineering or architecture, including leading complex, cross-team initiatives
  • Experience with SugarCRM or similar legacy/CRM platforms and modernization strategies
  • Proven success decomposing monolithic systems into microservices or distributed architectures
  • Strong experience with event-driven systems and messaging technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar)
  • Expertise in API design (REST, GraphQL, or gRPC), including contract design and versioning
  • Experience driving technical strategy, standards, and design reviews across teams
  • Domain experience in payments, insurance claims, or financial services
Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, reliability, and observability

Preferred:

  • Experience leading large-scale modernization initiatives across multiple teams
  • Familiarity with insurance carrier integrations
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Background in architecture governance (e.g., Architecture Review Boards)

Desired Traits:

  • Action Oriented
  • Growth Mindset
  • Positive Outlook
  • Problem Solver
  • Self-starter
  • Demonstrates Ethical Behavior
  • Strong Drive
  • Team Player
